Until a reputable surveyor gives the go-ahead, you should stay on land until the surveyor gives the go-ahead.

A note to existing boatowners: when an insurance advisor remarkets your insurance to other companies, the process can spark the need for an updated C&V survey. If the survey on file is greater than 24 months, or it was performed while the vessel was afloat, this may not meet the underwriting criteria for the new quote. A good time to proactively have your boat surveyed is during your routine haul out for bottom work.

The best marine surveyors are true allies in the used boat-buying process. Choose the right one, and you’ll be able to make the most informed purchase possible. Choose poorly, and you could face a future filled with repairs, injury, and a vessel that always seems to need extra TLC. A quality marine surveyor is a tell it like it is specialist, the person who discloses any areas of concern with the watercraft.

Do I definitely need a marine survey?

Still not convinced it’s a necessary step in the used boat purchase process? Consider the comparison of a home purchase done without an inspection. The abode might look beautiful on the outside but harbor asbestos within the walls, or cracks in the foundation, etc. Don’t take a used boat at face value. How do I choose a good marine surveyor?

This isn’t just a question of choosing the first person you find after a Google search. At this time, surveyors need not be accredited by the state. There is no federal license; they do not require certification or meet sanctions to declare their position as a marine surveyor. Look for the designation of NAMS-CMS or SAMS-AMS. These designations, obtained through extensive testing and continuing education, are given by the National Association of Marine Surveyors and the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors. Those entities are the sole organizations in North America to require education and ethics programs for their surveyors.

Of course, a degree on the wall does not indicate definite competence – but it’s a start. Ask the marine surveyor about their experience. Ask to see a sample of a past survey. Have boating friends? Find out who they recommend.

I found a marine surveyor I like. Now what?

It’s time to ask more questions. Do your research: How long have they been in business? What type of craft do they specialize in surveying? What is their availability? A marine surveyor who primarily focuses on sailboats may not be the best selection for your performance boat, for example, or vice versa.

Can this person envision where every component of your craft should be? Some surveyors have experience with building boats, making them aware of the ‘puzzle’ of putting components together correctly. These professionals conceivably will notice if something is not right regarding a craft.

Go ahead and ask about price, but don’t make that your reason for hiring. Think about the long-term cost of owning the boat. This survey cost is likely to be a very small investment over the long run, but it’s one that could make a huge difference. Price is going to depend on the size of the boat, where the survey will be located and whether you require haul out, etc.

The survey will likely take about a day to complete.
