Bunces Pass fans, rejoice:
The waterway prized by boaters will open once again. It came as a shock to many when the Pinellas Board of County Commissioners passed an extremely restrictive ordinance regarding Bunces that established harsh vessel exclusion zones in the area. Thanks to the collective voice of the boating community, that order will be rescinded.
It took 7,000 signers of a petition, lengthy public commentary and the specific focus of Tampa Bay Marine Industry Association (TBMIA) member Kevin Carlan to spark the change. Going forward, TBMIA will participate in the crafting of a sensible action plan that features safety measures. What this plan will feature remains to be seen, but it could include a no wake zone as well as swimming buoy placement. Safety, of course, is paramount.
The boaters’ voices have been heard. We at W3 Marine Insurance commend the Commission for their wise decision, and also recognize the important work Southwest Florida Marine Industries Association (SWFMIA) does to support our area.
